The story had previously been brought to the stage in the late 19th century, when Ahmed Shawqi wrote a poetic play about the tragedy, now considered one of the best in modern Arab poetry. كانت القصة قد عرضت علي المسرح من قبل في أواخر القرن التاسع عشر، عندما كتب أحمد شوقي مسرحيته الشعرية عن تلك المأساة والتي تعتبر أفضل ما كتب في الأدب العربي الحديث.
